How to Use This Theme
• Evangelism. Jesus tells us that the fields of our communities are ripe for harvest, but there is a lot more work to be done than workers to do it. Part of being Christian means that we participate in the harvest. (Matthew 9:35-38)
• Grace. When Jesus is challenged about eating from the grain fields on the Sabbath, he uses the opportunity to explain the nature of grace and God’s law. This story is helpful for moving beyond the legalism and rules that confine many of Christ’s followers and churches. (Mark 2:23-3:6)
• Materialism. Jesus invites us to evaluate our lives and the things of this world from the perspective of the future kingdom of God. When we hoard our grain and store up bigger and bigger barns, whom do we end up serving? (Luke 12:13-21)
• Sacrifice. Jesus used a kernel of wheat as a metaphor for the necessity of sacrifice- his, and our own as well. Unless we die to ourselves, we are unable to fully live. (John 12:20-26)
